Sometimes slow is better, especially when it comes to the rate of protein digestion. While rapid protein uptake is desirable immediately before and after exercise, a delayed effect is probably more beneficial for the rest of the day.

Casein proteins have a sensitive pH and are "compatible" with the acidic environment of the stomach. As a result, this can cause casein chains to persist for even more than twice as long as whey and other proteins, until they are broken down into amino acid subcomponents.

Given its unique delayed-action qualities, casein can be described as an anti-catabolic or muscle-protective protein.
