Curcumin Complex is a plant-based capsule made with three powerful herbal extracts: Turmeric (95% curcuminoids, 41% curcumin), Ginger (5% gingerols), and Black Pepper (95% piperine). These highly pure, highly standardized raw materials create one of the most potent anti-inflammatory products on the market. This product is designed for athletes and all types of people, both active and inactive. It is suitable for vegans and contains no allergens.
Key Benefits of Turmeric
- Anti-inflammatory: Its main action is to act as a powerful natural anti-inflammatory whose identified mechanisms of action include the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as, for example, Interleukins 1 and 6 (IL-1 and IL-6) and Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNF-α). At a sports level, this seems to attenuate the intensity of post-exercise muscle pain, that is, known as DOMS (from its acronym in English), therefore, it could be said that it favors recovery (Rosińska-Lewandoska, D. et al., JEHS. 2.024 and Liu, X. et al., PO. 2.024). Also for this reason it can be a protector for the joints. And, in general, it has analgesic effects, which is why it is used as a natural substitute for NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), both for its anti-inflammatory action and for its analgesic action, that is, it serves as an alternative treatment for various chronic inflammatory diseases (arthritis, gastrointestinal, cancer, psoriasis, etc.).
- Antioxidant effect: It helps protect cells against oxidative damage because, on the one hand, it helps eliminate ROS (acronym in English for Reactive Oxygen Species) (Nanavati, K. et al., EJN. 2.022) and, on the other hand, it enhances the increase in the activity of our body's own antioxidant enzymes (Alam, MS et al., P. 2.024).
- Immunomodulatory effect: Helps maintain normal immune function, for example, in patients with autoimmune diseases it helps reduce systemic inflammation (Alam, MS et al., P. 2,024).
- Effect against neurodegenerative disorders: Such as Alzheimer's disease (Yang, F. et al., JBC. 2005). Curcumin can cross the blood-brain barrier in small but biologically active amounts, where it mitigates nerve inflammation by suppressing the release of proinflammatory cytokines, as already mentioned, which are usually elevated in response to injuries and accumulation of amyloid plaques (Fernández-Lázaro, D. et al., N. 2020). It is worth noting that curcumin supplementation has also been associated with an improvement in mood in people with major depressive disorder (Alam, MS et al., P. 2024), highlighting its potential neuroprotective and psychotropic properties.
Key Benefits of Ginger
- Anti-inflammatory: Being a plant from the turmeric family, many of its properties are similar, so it also has significant anti-inflammatory properties. This is why it alleviates the pain of DOMS (sore muscles) in athletes, which improves recovery. This analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect appears to occur cumulatively, so its continued use is recommended both in the days before and after a competition or during phases of the season with peak training intensity (Christopher Black, D. et al., TJOP. 2010).
- Antioxidant effect and immune support: Being rich in antioxidants and bioactive components, it helps modulate systemic inflammation and oxidative stress generated by intense exercise. Also, including ginger daily helps contribute to a better immune system and, therefore, reduce the risk of disease, something very important for athletes, especially during the winter.
- Gastrointestinal improvements: In endurance sports (triathlons, ultramarathons, etc.), gastrointestinal discomfort or nausea are common among some runners during competitions. In these cases, small doses of ginger can help settle the stomach (Nguyen Hoang Anh et al., N. 2020).
Key Benefits of Black Pepper
- It is primarily added because it improves the absorption of certain bioactive compounds that naturally have low bioavailability, such as curcumin. This is mainly because it inhibits its hepatic metabolism and slows its breakdown in the digestive tract, which can increase its systemic absorption by up to 2,000% (Rosińska-Lewandoska, D. et al., JEHS. 2024).
- Adding an active ingredient such as piperine can enhance and maintain the positive effects of curcumin.
Why use the combination of these three extracts?
Because they act synergistically, thus enhancing the effects that each of them have separately, so much so that some studies have shown that the consumption of these 3 herbal extracts compared to drugs such as naproxen (an NSAID) improves PGE2 (Prostate Glandin E2) levels in patients with chronic osteoarthritis in a similar way to the drug discussed (Heidari-Beni, M. et al., PR. 2.020). It has been shown that incorporating ginger into a mixture of turmeric with piperine further promotes vasodilation and enhances anti-inflammatory effects (Hegde, M. et al., AO. 2.023).
Conclusions
The available scientific evidence suggests that oral curcumin supplementation could positively influence both health and physical performance in athletes and/or physically active individuals. Curcumin appears to be safe and potentially beneficial in the context of sport and exercise, primarily due to its ability to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, attenuate muscle soreness and damage, and thus improve muscle recovery and support both physiological and psychological responses to training. These effects could contribute to improved athletic performance and overall training adaptability.
Recommended for all types of people, especially those with a chronic inflammatory disease who are looking to improve their health, to the extent possible, by minimizing drug intake and, therefore, their side effects.
Ingredients
Concentrated turmeric extract (Curcuma longa, root), corn starch, concentrated ginger extract (Zingiber officinale, root), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose capsule, concentrated black pepper extract (Piper nigrum, fruit), anti-caking agent: magnesium salts of fatty acids.
Instructions for use
Take one capsule daily or as directed by your doctor or nutritionist. To improve absorption and avoid possible gastric discomfort, take it preferably with a meal containing fat (oil, nuts, avocado, etc.).
Professional advice
- Acute supplementation protocol (4–5 days) for high-load training and/or competition phases: To optimize recovery processes, take one dose before and, above all, another dose after the training session or competition. This protocol should be started 1 to 2 days before the specific session or competition and continued for the following 2 or 3 days.
- Long-term or chronic (4–12 weeks) supplementation protocol: This intake protocol could amplify the benefits against muscle damage and therefore promote better recovery. Take one serving daily with breakfast or dinner.
- Mixed supplementation protocol: This consists of maintaining a chronic protocol and, at times of peak training or competition, reinforcing it with an acute protocol, i.e., increasing the dose and changing the timing of intake.
Warnings and/or contraindications
Turmeric
Consult your doctor, specialist, or nutritionist if you are diabetic, as turmeric can lower blood sugar, so you should keep this in mind if you are taking any diabetes medications such as metformin or insulin. It may cause hypoglycemia.
Ginger
Consult your doctor, specialist or nutritionist if you are taking any anticoagulant drug such as warfarin or antiplatelet agents such as acenocoumarol (Sintrom) or acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin, Adiro, etc.), as this may increase the risk of hemorrhage.
Black pepper
As already mentioned, it improves the absorption of various bioactive compounds, including certain medications. So, consult your doctor, specialist, or nutritionist, as it can enhance the effect of antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, etc.), painkillers (ibuprofen, diclofenac, etc.), and antihypertensives (amlodipine, etc.). It can also be dangerous for people taking medications that are metabolized in the liver, such as statins, increasing the risk of liver toxicity.
